Brunei Currency and Monetary Board maintains a tradition of issuing limited commemorative items especially in conjunction with any special event. To date, 72 types of commemorative currency notes and coins and also medallions, had been issued to commemorate various significant events and occasions for sale to general public.
In addition to those coins in general circulation, coins with face values of B$1, B$2, B$3, B$5, B$10, B$20, B$25, B$30, B$50, B$100, B$200, B$250, B$500, B$750 and B$1,000 have been issued to collectors. The latest edition of commemorative coins being the ones issued on 23 February 2004 in conjunction of the 20th Anniversary of Independence of Brunei Darussalam. This limited edition featured three types of coins with coloured portrait of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam and three royal ceremonial items in full colour on all gold, silver and cupronickel coins.
Other than coins, in 1996, Brunei Currency and Monetary Board also issued polymer note sets in denominations of B$1, B$5 and B$10 in both leather and deluxe folders. These are special collector items where the serial numbers of each set are matched and consist of 5 digits instead of the usual 6 digits of the polymer notes in circulation.
Besides issuing commemorative notes and coins, in 1998, special medallions were produced to commemorate the proclamation of The Crown Prince of Brunei Darussalam. These medallions came in three types i.e. in solid gold, silver and copper.
In 2003, Brunei Currency and Monetary Board issued for the first time, collectable uncut polymer notes in denomination of $5. There are three types in 3-piece, 8-piece and 35-piece sheets with attractive packaging featuring the pitcher plants.
