If you are in doubt as to the genuineness of a Brunei note or coin, please do not hesitate to come to The Brunei Currency and Monetary Board to have it verified.
The Penal Code provides for various offences, as listed below, which are punishable by imprisonment for up to 15 years and a fine:-
Section 489A – counterfeiting currency notes or banknotes.
Section 489B – using as genuine forged or counterfeit currency notes or banknotes.
Section 489C – possession of forged or counterfeit currency notes or banknotes.
Section 489D – making or possessing instruments or materials for forging or counterfeiting currency notes or banknotes.
The Currency and Monetary Order, 2004 itself has various provisions which if contravened, one is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 15 years or both.
So, if you discover or receive a counterfeit note or coin, you should report immediately to the nearest police station.
