Notes issued by Brunei Currency and Monetary Board, if not mutilated or imperfect shall be legal tender up to their face value.
Till today, Brunei Currency and Monetary Board had issued various series of notes of denomination B$1, B$5, B$10, B$25, B$50, B$100, B$500, B$1,000 and B$10,000.
For denominations of B$1, B$5 and B$10, there had been 4 different designs since issuance. There are now 5 different designs for B$50 and B$100 including the latest polymer series. As for the B$500, there were 3 different paper designs and B$1,000 notes, there were 2 designs and the B$10,000 denomination had only one design which was issued in 1989. The B$25 note was a special issue in 1992 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam accession to the throne. All the background designs and ornamentation for the B$25 note were inspired by Malay and Muslim decorative art motives. All the notes issued are legal tender in Brunei Darussalam.
During 1996, two series of new notes were introduced. In February, new polymer currency notes of B$1 denomination were issued and in July 1996, further denominations of B$5 and B$10 polymer notes all of the same size were issued. Polymer substrate was introduced for the very first time in Brunei Darussalam and used only for the smaller denominations of B$1, B$5 and B$10 due to their high usage since a study has shown that polymer material is more durable.
Within the same year in May and August, new B$100 notes and B$50 paper notes were introduced. The new B$50 and B$100 are of same size unlike previous series. All of these notes will circulate side by side with any earlier series of notes.
In 2000, a new B$500 paper note was introduced featuring the Royal Regalia Building on the reverse side.
Two new polymer notes B$50 and B$100 were introduced in July 2004 to commemorate His Majesty’s Birthday. These new notes have high security features and the themes complement the earlier polymer notes series featuring flora and fauna of Brunei Darussalam.
In an effort to keep up with new technology, Brunei Currency and Monetary Board will produce new designs with security features of notes from time to time.
In 2004, two new polymer notes for circulation consisting of B$50 and B$100 were introduced.
By 2007, BCMB has managed to issue a complete set of polymer notes in the denomination from B$1 to B$10,000.
In an effort to keep up with new technology and ensuring the quality of the Brunei currency notes, the Brunei Currency and Monetary Board will continue to produce new designs with security features of notes from time to time.
