Below is our history through the decades :
v A temporary Customs office was built on an island near the centre of Brunei Town. Several years later it was moved to the land near the Brunei River.
v April 1906. The Customs Laws and Regulation on the entry duty collection was introduced.
v The Customs Department united with the Monopoly Department, lead by Mr. Goldfinch (Superintendent of Customs and Monopoly) with 17 staffs.
1915
v The Customs Department united with Treasury Department and took the name of Customs, Treasury and Monopoly Department.
1930
v Until 1933, the Customs Department was separated from the Treasury Department but united with the Marine Department to become Customs, Marine and Monopoly Department.
1933
v The Monopoly Department was separated from Customs and Marine Department.
1942
v Until 1974, the Department wore Gray Uniform.
1946
v Until 1951, the Customs and Marine Department was headed by the Controller of Customs, Mr. D. Trumble.
1948
v The position Controller of Customs become Commissioner of Customs and Marine Department.
1952
v Until 1954, the Customs and Marine Department was headed by the Controller of Customs Mr. Corigan.
1954
v 5th July, amendment to the Customs Laws (No. 5 1954) and now known as the Customs Act.
1955
v Until 1958, the Customs and Marine Department was headed by the Controller of Customs Mr. R.E. Charter.
1956
v The Customs Department was separated from the Marine Department.

1957
v 15th June, the Customs Department in Kuala Belait was officially opened by His Royal Highness Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Sa'adul Khairi Waddien (the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam).
1958
v 22nd December 1958 to 1st December 1974 Awg Othman Chua Kwong Soon, the first local to be appointed as the Controller of Customs.
v 1st April "Merchandisation of Trade Statistic" was introduced in lin with the coding system "standard International Trade Classification (SITC)" as reference on the classification of commodities.
1967
v 1st January 1967 to 31st December 1974, YAM Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibon Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Abu Bakar was appointed as the first Deputy Controller of Customs (YAM was awarded with the title YAM Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad on 14th January 1970 and YAM Pengiran Shahbandar Sahibul Bandar on 2nd August 1972).
1968
v Sungai Tujoh Customs Control Post in Kuala Belait commenced its operation.
1975
v 1st January 1975 to 1st April 2000, YAM Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibon Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar hold the position of the Controller of Royal Customs and Excise.
v Until 30th September 2002, this Department wore cream-coloured uniform.
1979
v 24th December, the change of the word Bea (Customs and Bea Department) to Excise (Customs and Excise Department) was gazette in Section 1 of the Government Gazette.
v Until 30th September 2002, this Department wore cream coloured uniform.
1980
v 12th July, the department hosted the 4th Al-Quran Recital Competition for Government in uniforms at the Customs Wharf, Bandar Seri Begawan.
1984
v After the independence of Brunei Darussalam, the department was structured under the administration of Ministry of Finance.
v The department become the 6th members of Asean Working Group on Customs Matters (AWGCM).
v 29th Mac, for the first time the department attended in the 7th AWGCM meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
1988
v 12th April, for the first time the department hosted the 12th AWGCM Meeting and was officially launched by the Controller of Customs YAM Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibon Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar.
v 13th October, a mini Customs Museum was established to preserve the historical materials of the department.
1996
v 1st July, the departments become the 142nd member of the World Customs Organization (WCO). The head office of WCO is in Brussels, Belgium.
1998
v 18th Mac, the department moved to the new building in Jalan Menteri Besar.

2000
v 1st April, YM Awg Eussoff Agaki bin Haji Ismail was appointed as the Controller of Royal Customs and Excise.
v The department held the 1st Marching Competition for its staff at the Customs Headquarters, and was officiated by the Deputy Controller of Customs Pengiran Haji Naseruddin bin Pengiran Haji Tajuddin.
v 16th September, the department chaired the Second Session of the APEC-SCCP Meeting at the International Convention Centre (ICC).
2001
v 26th January, the department celebrated the first International Customs Day.
v 23rd June, the launching of the 21st Century RCED - Vision, Mission and Goal of the department.
v December, the department published the first Customs Bulletin.

2002
v 1st October, the department held a new Uniform Launching Ceremony for the staff of the department. The new uniform (Navy Blue) was worn on the 15th July 2002 in conjunction with His Majesty 56th Birthday celebration.
2003
v 15th July, the Controller of RCED, YM Awg Eussoff Agaki bin Haji Ismail was granted the Star of Order Most Honorable Order of the Crown of Brunei, Second Class (DPMB) which carried the title Dato Paduka by His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam in conjunction with His Majesty's 57th Birthday celebration.
2004
v 1st January, Putat Customs Control Post located at Mukim Lumapas commenced its operation after the Dermaga Control Post was closed.
2005
v 14th May, YM Dato Paduka Mohd Eussoff Agaki bin Haji Ismail, the Controller of RCED was appointed as the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.
v 6th June, YM Haji Brahim bin Haji Ismail was appointed as the Controller of RCED.
2006
v 4th Mac, the Customs Act (Chapter 36) was amended and replaced by Customs Order 2006 and Excise Order 2006 respectively after granted by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam.
v 8th Mac, Customs Transit Rules was introduced.
v 29th April, YM Haji Brahim bin Haji Ismail, the controller of RCED launched the new Mission, Vision for RCED.
v 1st July, the Controller of RCED, YM Haji Ismail was appointed as the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development.
v 1st September, YM Pengiran Abdul Haris bin Pengiran Haji Shahbudin was appointed as Acting Controller of RCED.
2007
v 1st June, YM Pengiran Abdul Haris bin Pengiran Haji Shabudin was confirmed as the Controller of RCED.
2008
v 19th January, YM Pengiran Abdul Haris bin Pengiran Haji Shabudin was appointed as the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
v 28th April, YM Haji Mohammad Abdoh bin Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Salam was appointed as the Acting Controller of Customs.
2009
v 1st March, YM Yahya bin Haji Idris was appointed as the Acting Controller of Customs.
v 1st August, YM Yahya bin Haji Idris was appointed as the Controller of Customs.
2010
v 9th July, 4hb Rabiulawal 1431, by command of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Prime Minister's Office announced that Awg Yahya bin Haji Idris, controller of Ministry of Finance's Royal Customs and Excise Department, has been appointed as Deputy Permanent Secretary (Performance and Compliance) at the Ministry of Finance.
v 19th August, 9hb Ramadhan 1431, Yang Mulia Awang Haji Juanda bin Haji A.Rashid has been appointed as the Acting Controller of the Royal Customs and Excise Department by

v 1st March, 26hb Rabiulawal 1432, Yang Mulia Awang Haji Juanda bin Haji A.Rashid confirmed as Controller of the Royal Customs and Excise Department.
v July 1, 2011. The Ministry of Finance yesterday announced that His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented for Royal Brunei Customs and Excise Department to enforce and implemet red and green channel system at the Brunei international Airport as stipulated under Section 99 of Customs Order 2006 effective July 1, 2011.
